Industrial oven bands operate under continuous longitudinal tension while being exposed to elevated temperatures. Because the band is wide, even a small difference in the position of one drum bearing relative to the other can create unequal tension across the band width.
A drum that is out of parallel by approximately 2 mm may already begin to produce a measurable difference in tension from one side of the oven band to the other. The wider and more highly tensioned the band, the more important this difference becomes.
Why Unequal Tension Damages Metal Bands
When one side of the drum is slightly advanced, that side of the band follows a longer effective path. It therefore carries more tension, while the opposite side carries less. The band is forced to continuously correct this difference as it travels around the drums and through the heated oven chamber.
Temperature makes this condition more severe. Thermal expansion changes the band dimensions during heating and cooling, and any existing mechanical misalignment can concentrate cyclic stress along one edge. Over time, this can produce edge cracking, distortion, uneven pitch, damaged joints and premature fatigue failure.
Drum Level Is Just as Important as Parallelism
Parallel drums are not enough if they are not correctly levelled. A drum that is tilted can shift the band laterally, change the contact pattern and create unequal loading on bearings, support rolls and tracking devices.
A complete oven topography therefore checks both horizontal level and the geometric relationship between the head drum, tail drum, support rolls and oven centerline. Measuring only one drum or relying only on a conventional spirit level may not reveal accumulated geometric errors over the full oven length.
Band Centering Supports Uniform Baking
The oven band should normally travel near the designed centerline of the baking chamber. When the band consistently favors one side, product position relative to heat zones, airflow, burners and exhaust conditions can change.
Correct centering helps maintain consistent baking conditions across the product width. It also preserves clearance from the oven structure, side seals, guides and tracking controls.
Tracking Controls Should Correct, Not Fight, the Oven Geometry
Tracking systems are intended to make small corrections. They should not be required to continuously force the band back against a geometric error created by non-parallel drums, tilted bearings or misaligned support rolls.
When the band continually runs toward one side, it may rub against controls, guides or structural components. The resulting friction can damage the band edge, overheat components, create metal debris and accelerate wear of the tracking system itself.
